Using F-stops to create looks in your photography

With a DSLR or mirrorless camera, there are a several ways to get a blurred background (also known as bokeh):

Use a wide-aperture lens: Shallower depths of field are produced by lenses with wide apertures (low f-stop numbers), which let more light pass through the lens. This can aid in blurring the background and drawing attention to the subject.

Focus on the main point: A telephoto lens used to focus in on the subject can also provide a shallow depth of field and blur the background.

Get closer to the topic: The background will become increasingly blurry the closer you go to the subject.
